Civita di Bagnoregio, Italy is a village connected by a single narrow cement walkway to the surrounding countryside and it is inaccessible to modern means of transportation. Civita di Bagnoregio is perched on top of a hill at an altitude of 1440 ft. above sea level. Civita is called “The Dying City” because it is built on tufa (a soft volcanic stone typical of central Italy), which has been eroding over the centuries. Its population abandoned it when there was an earthquake several hundred years ago, but people have been returning over the last 50 years and now they number about 30. It is said that the village is at least 3000 years old, but some say closer to 4000.
